Volunteer at Alemany Farm If you couldn't purchase your food from Safeway (sorry... I mean Whole Foods), where would you go to buy produce? Alemany Farm, a working farm in southeastern San Francisco, features a back to the basics exploration and celebration of agriculture. Twice a week, volunteers till the soil and cultivate the crops. The session starts with the unpaid "Farm Team" leading a guided tour of the site... the 4.5 acre plot bordering the turbulence of surrounding highways like a flower bursting through a crack in the sidewalk. They “show you the ropes” sharing the fundamental techniques of farming, including irrigation, pruning, crop rotation, and fertilization. Dress for the experience with rugged shoes and calloused clothing. Bring your own dance partner and volunteer with a friend... will they get dirt under their nails? Run from spiders? Stand in fertilizer? You will enjoy numerous volunteering options as Alemany Farm features an herb garden, tree groves, mushroom igloos, and even beekeeping. Here, the “fruits of your labor” is not simply a proverb... each session concludes with a bountiful harvest of in-season produce like Sungold tomatoes, succulent strawberries, green beans and fragrant basil.Dinner tastes better with a dash of sweat from your brow. The Details: Alemany Farm 700 Alemany Blvd, San Francisco, CA 1st & 3rd Sundays, Noon - 5pm 2nd and 4th Saturdays, Noon - 5pm Every Monday, 1 - 5pm Harvest Fest & Party, October 24, 2009 |
