Crissy Field, Saturday Aug 8th at 2pm
Spectator sports don’t necessarily require steroid controversies and $72 field club seats. Take a reprieve and witness pristine competition — the first ever Kiteboard Course Racing World Championships hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco. The competition, a regatta for kiteboarders, culminates on Saturday afternoon in Crissy Field, an inlet with more white caps than a KKK rally. More than 80 top professional kiteboarders have journeyed to the Bay to lay claim to the first ever title.
But there are risks. First and foremost, kiteboarding is at the mercy of Mother Nature delivering kicking gusts of winds. Don’t think a world championship could be canceled due to conditions? Just ask any surfer about the Mavericks Surf Contest ’08-’09. The weather for this weekend should be decent… cranking enough wind to avoid schlogging. There are much greater perils for the competitors… kitemares. Hopefully, there are no surprise “developing waterspouts.”
Till next time!
